Al Camillo Sr., Former Marine...

Alfred Francis Camillo Sr., a native who lived most of his life in his hometown, Greenwich, Connecticut, passed away on February 14th, 2010 at the age of 80.

Born on August 18th, 1929, he was the first child of Robert Camillo and Rose Cofone Camillo.

He spent his early years growing up in Greenwich’s Italian neighborhood known to many as “Chickahominy”. As an adolescent he was affectionately referred to by his friends as “Nature”. A name inspired by his love of the outdoors and animals, he spent his days in the neighborhood tending to animals, playing baseball, and filling the streets with his amazing vocals which reminded all who heard him of his idol, Frank Sinatra. In 1950, he entered the United States Marine Corp. where he was stationed in Albany, GA and proudly served as an Assistant Drill Instructor. In 1953, he started his own business, Camillo Carting, a waste disposal company, which he continued to work every day until he became afflicted with diabetes in the late1990s. He ultimately divested the business in 2002.

A quick wit, extraordinary character, a captivating story teller with a warm smile, and a proud Marine, he made an indelible impression on all who met him.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Maureen Cuddihy Camillo, eldest son Gary Camillo and daughter-in-law Diane of Fairfield, CT; son, Alfred Fred Camillo Jr. of Greenwich, CT; daughter, Francine Pennella and son-in-law Anthony Pennella and his two grand children, Ben and Ali of Stamford, CT; sister, Ann Camillo Giandurco of Port Chester, New York; sister-in-law Margaret “Mickey” Camillo as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Marie Prizio, and a daughter, Donna Marie, as well as a brother, Joseph Camillo.

Calling hours will take place Wednesday, February 17th from 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Castiglione Funeral Home, 132 Hamilton Avenue, Greenwich, CT. 203.869.0894

Funeral mass will take place on Thursday, February 18th at 10:00 am at St. Agnes Church, 247 Stanwich Road, Greenwich, CT. 203.869.5396.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Greenwich Home Hospice Fund in memory of Alfred Camillo Sr. Greenwich Home Hospice Fund; c/o Greenwich Hospital Development Office, 5 Perryridge Road, Greenwich, CT 06830.
