Barbara Linsenmeyer of Riverside died Sunday morning in Greenwich Hospital following a brief illness. She was born in Manhattan on 22 September 1940, the only daughter of the late Alexey and Ann Panish, and was a proud alumna of The Mary Louis Academy in Jamaica, Lauralton Hall in Milford, and Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart.
On 12 August 1961 she married John Linsenmeyer at St Teresa Church in Trumbull, CT, and after moving north from Alexandria, Virginia, lived in Riverside for 44 years. She is survived by her husband, daughter Ann (Nelson) of Greenwood Village, Colorado, son Thomas of Fairfield, and daughter Barbara (Malone) of Riverside, grandsons Ian Malone and Alexey Linsenmeyer, granddaughters Abigail Nelson, Emma and Kelly Linsenmeyer, and Barbara Malone, her sons in law Brett Nelson and Tom Malone and her daughter in law Lara Linsenmeyer
Back in the day, Barbara was an accomplished amazone (side-saddle equestrienne) and a middling shot with rifle and pistol, all of which amused her no end in light of the description by Herodotus 2,500 years ago of the education of young aristocrats, who were taught to ride, to shoot and to speak the truth. She never gave up or wavered an inch on the truth part. She enjoyed, in no particular order, Rocky Point Club, good food (she was an accomplished performer herself, with a large collection of cookbooks), travel particularly in the Highlands of Scotland, Atlantic Canada and the low country of South Carolina and Georgia, Irish setters and golden retreivers, the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins, SJ, and William Butler Yeats, and pottering in the garden. She deeply loved without qualification her family, being a grandmother, St Agnes Parish, and the Holy Eucharist.
Her requiem Mass will be on Saturday, 13th March at 10:00 am at St Agnes Church, 247 Stanwich Road, Greenwich, CT 06830 [directions www.stagnesrc.org]
There are no calling hours. Burial will be private.
Please do not send flowers. Anyone wishing to honour her memory can send something to either of her two favourite charities: Red Cloud Indian School, attn: Fr. Peter Klink, SJ, 100 Mission Drive, Pine Ridge, South Dakota 57710 (605 867 5491,
